Article of the Month. NO SEDATION
Have you ever wondered, if a patient underwent hip surgery with NO SEDATION (only neuraxial anesthesia) ...wouldn't their risk of delirium be super low because they didn't receive any systemic anesthesia?
Well, a recent study tried just that. They randomized 900 old folks with hip fractures into two groups: one group received General Anesthesia, and the other group received Neuraxial anesthesia (spinal, epidural, or both) with NO SEDATION. (In case you're wondering... this study was not performed in the US)
The results were surprising: there was no difference in the incidence of delirium within the first 7 post-op days--(5-6 % in both groups)
So, many general anesthesia isn't to blame for post-op delirium after all?
