Article of the Month

Article of the Month highlights a recent high-quality journal article which will impact your clinical practice. This month, we feature "Spinal Anesthesia or General Anesthesia for Hip Surgery in Older Adults" by M.D. Neuman, et al., published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Nov 25, 2021.

Bottom line: This is a high-quality randomized trial conducted in the U.S. and Canada which showed no difference in 60-day mortality or ambulation status whether patients received spinal or GA for hip fracture surgery.

The details: 1,600 total patients, mean age 78. Delirium occurred in approximately 20% in both groups. Mortality at 60 days was approximately 4% in both groups.

How this will influence your practice: don't feel too bad if you can't nail the spinal!
